St. Jude Marathon Weekend 2013
Team Alyssa Rocks & Dude Dance have raised over $25,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital!! We had an amazing time doing it. First up, as most Memphians know, Iceagedeon 2013 advanced on Memphis and forced the race to be cancelled. However, thanks to our awesome family and friends, we had an amazing weekend! Saturday we had a fantastic turn out to Shelby Farms to do our 1 mile Family Fun Run. For Luca’s soccer team and some of Alyssa’s friends, it was the last mile they needed to complete their Kids Marathon. We heard that medals are being mailed out. I do not need mine, however, I do hope this is true for these kids. They are a wonderful support group for our kids. We are very thankful to have them all. And since they did the work, they deserve their medals. We had wonderful family come in from all over the south; Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia. Louisiana! I know they took a huge leap of faith to get here despite all the “Winter Storm” alerts.
Saturday we headed downtown despite the cancelled race and joined the fun at the race Expo. People were eating, chatting and enjoying the spirit of St. Jude. It was very heartwarming to see. We are grateful to the wonderful City of Memphis, St. Jude and ALSAC officials that handled all the chaos with dignity and grace. Because of hazardous conditions, the race had to be cancelled. I’m sure they took flack over it. However, what I saw Saturday, was all positive fun and enjoying being together. Everyone agreed the reason we all do this is for the kids of St. Jude. As a parent of one and an aunt of another, I cannot even tell you how wonderful it was to be a part of this event.
I also salute the Tigers, Grizzlies, Graceland and each Memphis attraction that offered discounted or free admission to all the visitors to our great city. First class in Southern Hospitality. FedEx Cares too! My husband and brother in law work at FedEx and Team FedEx team raised over $40,000! They had Alyssa & Tyler on their FedEx volunteer posters, which was cool. The kids still got their FedEx Santa hats that were going to be at the FedEx sponsored mile at the race.
So despite the bad weather and icy roads, I think the St. Jude Marathon Weekend was a huge success! To each and every team member, person that donated to our team, bought team shirts or wristbands, or took the time in some way to support us… THANK YOU! Thank you very much!
We are ready for next year and plan to raise even more money! Won’t you join us?
